What is compression?

Compression therapy applies a type of elastic device (the most common being compression socks) on limbs or other body parts to provide a controlled pressure. The compression device squeezes the vein walls together and helps improve the circulatory rate*.

Some additional benefits of compression therapy are:

  • Helps reduce swelling in the leg, ankle, and foot
  • Additional relief from leg aching
  • Increased blood circulation

Did you know?

Levels of compression are measured by millimeters of mercury (mmHg) and separated by grade.

FAQ from customers like you.

How do I take care of my compression stockings?

Medical compression stockings are part of your everyday life as well as part of therapy. There’s a lot you can do to ensure that your stockings remain undamaged and remain fully effective until they are replaced in six months’ time. We recommend special care products which are gentle on the knitted fabric.

How often should I wash my compression stockings?

Please wash your stockings every evening after taking them off so that odour and bacteria don’t get a foothold.

Can I tumble-dry compression stockings?

Medical compression stockings are suitable for tumble-drying. Please also use only a gentle cycle or low setting. You can also let your stockings air-dry. Do not leave your stockings in the sun to dry, and under no circumstances on a radiator or heater.

Why do medical compression stockings have to fit so tightly?

Compression stockings should fit like a second skin: Their effect is created by the compression stocking exerting compression (with a defined pressure distribution) on the extremities. To maintain the effectiveness of the compression stockings, please have your measurements checked regularly by a specialist. It’s important that, for example, changes in circumference due to weight gain or loss are included in the therapy.

How do medical compression stockings work?

Medical compression stockings work through the precisely defined pressure distribution on the leg: the compression is strongest at the ankle. towards the top, it decreases continuously. This applies to all models: knee socks, thigh stockings, and tights.

A medical compression stocking delivers its full effect when it fits like a second skin. This may feel unusual and tight at first, but soon you won’t want to miss the soothing and beneficial pressure on your leg. The trained staff at specialist medical retailers will therefore measure or scan the circumferences of your legs precisely to allow the stocking later to be tailored exactly to your anatomy.

Support stockings, in contrast, are not medical aids and have no medical effect. They are used only to prevent heavy legs in healthy veins.

How do medical compression stockings work in the case of lipoedema?

Wearing medical compression stockings regularly is an essential part of lipoedema therapy. Compression therapy can relieve pain and reduce possible oedema. As with lymphoedemas, flat knit models, which allow for optimum pressure stability thanks to less elastic material, are used here.

How many compression classes are there?

There are four compression classes. Specialists also speak of CCL 1 to 4: the higher the class, the stronger the compression – this is the pressure exerted by the medical compression stocking. The doctor specifies the compression class on the prescription for medical compression stockings.

What is the right compression class?

Assigning fixed compression classes to certain diseases of the venous or lymphatic vessel system is not useful. Doctors will make individual decisions on the suitable compression class for their patient. They consider the clinical picture and its characteristics as well as the physical condition: strength, mobility, and additional diseases affecting the patient must be taken into account.

How long should I wear my compression stockings during the day and how often?

For the best therapy success, please wear and wash your medical compression stockings daily. Patients with venous ailments and chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) wear their medical compression stockings from morning to the evening for their entire lives. This also applies to patients with lymphoedema and lipoedema.

I’m planning to travel by airplane. How do support stockings help me during the flight?

Travel stockings from medi are not support stockings but compression stockings: compression supports travellers during long flights. People with healthy veins use medi travel socks to prevent the risk of travel thrombosis. The stocking promotes your natural blood circulation.

The result: your legs feel light and relaxed even on long flights. Travellers suffering from venous disease, for example, wear medical compression stockings prescribed by doctors.

What do I have to consider when washing my compression stockings?

Wash your compression stockings separately or with garments of the same colour in the washing machine at a temperature of 30 or 40 degrees. Please wash them on a gentle wash cycle. Use a simple colour detergent without brighteners. Never use fabric softeners. Spin your stockings at a maximum of 1,200 revolutions per minute.
